One hundred and seventy-nine...

This picture is so cute of Avery but so sad at the same time. Do you notice the BIG HUGE ouchie on the side of her face. She took a tumble out of bed and hit the foot of the night stand and now has a this big bruise. I think what made it so bad is that she was sound asleep when she fell so it was all of her weight coming down and her body was so relaxed. Ouch! It looks horrible and it looks like it really hurts. It is getting better each day and is almost gone now.

This little creature is getting spoiled by Grandma this week.

What a pair!

Avery found a little friend outside last night. She was thrilled and wanted to keep it in her room. She asked what lady bugs eat. She was sure that it was leaves, so she promptly got some leaves and sat down in the grass and tried to hand feed the the lady bug that was scurrying all her hand. Her thought process was probably along the lines of "We feed carrots to the rabbits that way, why would this little bug be any different?"

I snapped the one above right after she said, "It flew away, but that is ok....because it's nature!"

Go ahead and try to reach into your computer monitor and pet him. This is Oreo. We got him from Uncle Joe (Ron's brother). See that little bowl next to him that is a little cup that applesauce comes in...just so you know how small he is. We love him and he is really starting to warm up to us. I love when his little motor boat gets going and you wonder how such a loud purr can come out of such a small little fella.

We took these to the kids' Great Grandma today and she loved them and the little visit that we had with her. She was so surprised, you could almost hear her heart melting as Avery marched in with them.

I think it is so stinkin' cute when he does this!
Sorry for the lame post but I am wayyyyy behind people!

Avery and Rowdy both earned this medal for participating in T-Ball this year. I think these are pretty cool. A trophy is nice but these were really nice. The bottom photo is an assignment I received from an on-line class I am taking...I will probably be posting many of my assignments here...so I apologize in advance if I am boring you with all the photography stuff.

I have been finishing up an editing job that has been on my to do list for awhile. I needed to reward myself for finishing that big job and play around with a photo of one of my favorite subjects. How fun is that! I never ever thought I would say this in a million years because I love to cut and paste and play with paper, but I can see the benifit of digital scrapbooking. No mess and no supplies.

Avery, drawing with her sparkler! Oh, how I remember sparklers as a kid and how much fun they were. They are not the same as they used to be. I remember them being more sparkly...no?

The following posts are kind of jumbled. But they tell a little bit about our Fourth of July weekend. We played a little, napped a little and ate a ton! That sound just about perfect to me!
Ron provided an outstanding fireworks display for us at home on the fourth.

Rowdy's new trick. Look out Sea World!

Ron has always said that he likes fish tacos. They have never, ever even sounded the least bit appealing to me. That was until I went to Baja Fresh with my sister in law and she got the Mahi, Mahi fish tacos and they looked sooooo good. She even told me they were good and I still didn't try them. After seeing hers I went to Baja Fresh the very next chance I got and tried them. They were so good!

Usually on the fourth we eat your standard American meal burgers, dogs, chips, salad (potato and macaroni)...you know the drill. Well, I had bigger and better things in mind. I was on a mission to recreate those tacos. I had a huge steak of tuna in the freezer from my brother who brings me fish from Alaska...so I went to work! They turned out so good I ate three!!!

Lesson learned: Don't knock it until you try it!

These cars are actually my favorite part of the parade. You know they bounce up and down and have their stereo's cranked up. They were not as animated as they have been in the past. I know, I know what a weird thing to have as your favorite. These white tow trucks are the "fleet" from our towing company. They all have names...The Big Show, The 95er, The Big Unit and Gonzo (not pictured).
How our tow truck crew got that van upside down and hitched up like that, I will never know. Way to go Uncle Rico (another nickname, of course), you Rock!!!!
Ron's new Sprint car...no nickname yet.
Bodie liked the horses!
I heard that his Dad pays him to do this every year! I think it is hilarious!

I am so behind in my posting that these fourth of July posts are going to have to fall in my month of June. We had a great 4th. We went to the parade and the kids basically had candy for lunch (people throw candy from the floats to the kids).

Rowdy entertained the prarade route with his pop-a-wheelies!!!

Avery was almost 1 in this picture. Not too shocking that her cozy is right by her side. I just wanted to blog about how much this little girl likes books. Sometimes, when we are shopping and we stop to look around in the toy section she can be found on the floor with a book. Often she will just blaze right throught the girls toys and nothing will catch her eye. But when we are near the books she will always find one to flip through. The photo below is a prime example of her nature. We had stopped in to take birthday treats to Rowdy's 1st grade class at the end of the year and this is where Avery settled in...the reading corner.
At bedtime she will say "I'm not tired, going to bed is boring". So my solution is to simply tell her that she doesn't have to go to sleep, but she has to be in your bed and she can read books. It works like a charm...she looks at books for awhile and then she will even get out of bed and turn her light off and tuck back it. I do have some sucessful Mom moments weaved in among all the crazy ones!

There is an article about Ron on the front page of the Sports Section of the Statesman Journal...Article found here.

Ron's friend wrote it and his name is Bill. But there aren't too many of Ron's friends that don't have a nickname...is it any surprise that Bill's is Scoop!

I tried to load the video of the wreck but it just wouldn't work.

I didn't ever post any photos of Avery at her spring dance recital because the photos were stuck in my camera. I accidentally had the camera on the wrong setting. I was finally able to get them out of the camera yesterday. The top photo is Miss Avery and her cousin backstage before their bunny number. They performed three dances in all. The recital includes the older dancers as well. Avery is just absolutely enamored with the older girls and several times throughout the night I caught her just starring at them as they warmed up or practice their routines one more time...it is so cute to watch her look up to the "big" girls.
After her first recital earlier in the year she even came home with a couple new dance steps that I know for sure she didn't learn in her class. I asked her where she learned them (I knew the answer, I just wanted to see what she said)...she said from watching the older girls. I think that I will keep her in dance for a long time! She is very good at it and I love the fact she is motivated to learn from the older girls example.

Ears positioned properly...check!
Waiting, on deck, for her turn to go on stage. See the little girl to the right...now do you understand why my Avery has "pony-tail" envy...it must be torture! If you don't know Avery has only had two trims (not actual hair cuts, just trims) in her life. Someday sweetie!

We enjoyed some yummy watermelon at lunch today. I like mine cold so I stuck it in the freezer for a bit and it was delicious! All I could hear when I took this was **slurp**

When I edited this picture I saved it under the file name "sniff". When ever Bodie sees a flower he wrinkles up his nose and sniffs in and out like he is smelling a flower. A day doesn't go by that I don't receive a flower or two from the yard from this little boy. Usually, it is a little dandelion or a daisy. It is really sweet and a reminder to enjoy the simple things in life. In the photo above he is holding a silk flower that he wanted off of a shelf in my office.

This post is for my brother-in-law, Aaron. He had a variety show at his house last weekend and among other performers, his band played. They sounded totally amazing, as always.

Before the show I snapped some photos of his band. I am posting them here so Aaron can see them.

The first shot was a challenge because we were in a dark basement and the original shot came out pretty grainy. So I played up the grain and made it even more grainy in photoshop. I am not in love with the final product but I'm happy with it. Maybe, you will like it Aaron. If not, I can take some more. I do like that the final image is kind of edgy and you guys look like rock stars! At any rate, it was good practice for me and fun to hear you guys sing. The second one is a bit better, but a different feel.

Just so I know I am not losing my edge, I had to post these too. I think one of the reasons I struggle with loving the first image is because it is nothing like the three below...I might need rosie little cheeks and sparkly eyes to showcase my ability as a photographer. I think my talent might lie in taking pictures of subjects that don't have five o'clock shadows...

One hundred and fifty-nine...

If you want to keep your kids busy for awhile, just set up one of these in your backyard. This was one of Ron's father's day presents. I am proud to say that I set it up all by myself. Well, that is not true. Rowdy helped me too.

The kids were in and out of it all afternoon.

Avery, swinging in Ron's other present. The hammock instructions said that it can hold up to 600 lbs. So, theoretically we could all get on it...hmmmm that would be interesting.

And I just had to share this one...that's my boy!!!!

You don't have to wonder for very long why Uncle Roger (Katie's Dad) suddenly bursts out into his rendition of "Ebony and Ivory" when he sees these two girls together.

NOTE: I can't take credit for the composition and processing of this image. I will write more about this picture and who inspired me to take it later. Some of you know her. So if you follow her blog you have seen a very similar picture. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, right?

The kids and I are obsessed with this song right now from Madacascar 2...it is nothing but total silliness and halarious!!! I might have loaded it into my ipod... : )

Big and Chunky....ENJOY!

Rowdy got to help Ron with a VERY BIG thing yesterday. At the end of hay season last year, Ron and I had a discussion about Rowdy being old enough this year to drive the truck while the trailer is being loaded with the bales of hay. Well, yesterday that day came! Rowdy got to drive this truck...

while pulling this trailer...

while looking this cute behind the wheel...
(I forgot to mention in his birthday post, his new thing is chewing gum and
learning how to blow bubbles too!)
SIDE NOTE: I got to buck hay for the first time yesterday! And it was awesome! Now when I wear my cowgirl boots, I can feel like it is a little more legitimate. I was a little bit itchy afterward, but I can handle that. This is that first year I have been able to pitch in and help with this step of the process. The first year we lived here, I was preganant with Bodie and last year I called in "too fat, lazy and out of shape to buck hay...sorry!"

I can't believe that we just finished T-Ball and it is time for me to register Rowdy for Football. These are photos from last fall. I don't think I posted very many of them during the season. Rowdy has mixed emotions about playing. He gets really nervous. But that is our cue as parents to get him involved. He played center last year and he could snap the ball really well. However, when the play got in motion he would just stand there. He is not very aggressive. And it is probably a little confusing to hear all your life "keep your hands to yourself" and then for us to be telling him to "GET A GUY" (that is something my Mother-in-law used to yell from the stands when she watched her boys play football, a little Shinkle family vernacular).

Be Aggressive B-E Aggressive! B-E-A-G-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E
Sorry, old chant from my cheerleading days!
It is so hard to know as a parent if the things that you involve your kids in are going to be positive experiences that will help shape them into well rounded people. Or, are they going to look back and say, "My parents forced me to play football and I didn't like it!"
Right now I choose to think the first of the two outcomes. Because of moments like these...
{Effort and Success}
{Encouragement}
{Teamwork}
